The present invention is directed to low toxicity boronated compounds and methodsfor their use in the treatment, visualization, and diagnosis of tumors. Morespecifically, the present invention is directed to low toxicity carborane-containingporphyrin compounds with halide, amine, or nitro groups and methods for theiruse particularly in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), X-ray radiation therapy(XRT), and photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of tumors of the brain,head and neck, and surrounding tissue. The invention is also directed to usingthese carborane-containing porphyrin compounds in methods of tumor imagingand/or diagnosis such as MRI, SPECT, or PET.
