The present invention relates to a composition for improving muscular functions and for preventing or treating muscle diseases containing a human placenta extract as an active ingredient. According to the present invention, the composition increases proliferation of muscle cells under oxidative stress, decreases an amount of active oxygen in the cell, enhances expression level of PGC1-alpha as a master protein involved in the synthesis of mitochondria, thereby promoting the synthesis of mitochondria. In addition, the composition of the present invention activates autophagy, and increases muscle volume in a model with muscular atrophy.
