The present invention provides a kit for detection of anionic detergent as adulterant in milk which is simple yet efficient and economical. The present kit eliminates the handling of different chemicals including handling and use of toxic chloroform. The kit is based on ionic interaction between the anionic detergent and the cationic dye. This interaction results into formation of a dye-detergent complex. This complex is extracted into a suitable non polar solvent. And intense violet color in lower layer indicates the presence of anionic detergent as adulterant in the sample.
