The invention relates to a method for working the soil along a row of plants, in which a retractable tool (15) for working the soil is moved along the row, at least one substantial portion of the tool being kept under the surface of the soil, wherein the tool is mounted so as to be freely rotatable and has a corrugated outline defining projecting peripheral portions (39) and retracted peripheral portions (40), and in which the axis of rotation (16) of the tool is kept slightly inclined relative to the vertical plane so as to cause the tool to rotate due to the forces exerted on the tool by the soil.Linvention concerne un procédé de travail du sol le long dun rang de pieds de culture, dans lequel on déplace le long du rang un outil (15) escamotable de travail du sol dont au moins une partie substantielle est maintenue sous la surface du sol, loutil étant monté libre en rotation et présentant un contour ondulé délimitant des portions périphériques saillantes (39) et des portions périphériques en retrait (40), et dans lequel on maintient laxe (16) de rotation de loutil faiblement incliné par rapport à la verticale de façon à provoquer la rotation de loutil, du fait des efforts exercés par le sol sur loutil.
