The present invention relates to a silicone coating process that enhances the durability of silicone coatings on the surfaces of surgical needles and other medical devices. surgical needles or silicone-coated medical devices produced by this process have superior lubricity and durability characteristics to facilitate repeated and successive passage through the tissue. The coating compositions used in the novel process contain an excess amount of the polymethyl hydrosiloxane-based crosslinker. After curing, the process uses gamma radiation to treat the lubricant coatings. the coatings have improved durability and performance. The penetration performance of the coated needles by this innovative method remains constant and flat over at least one hundred repeated passes through the tissue or tissue simulating medium. This provides a consistent or flat tactile needle response to the surgeon's hand during a long closure process, rather than an unpredictably increasing force profile.
