A biocompatible component having a surface intended for contact with living tissue, characterized in that the surface contains metal oxide particles, wherein said particles have an average particle size of less than 100 nm. 2. The biocompatible component according to claim 1, characterized in that the particles have an average particle size of less than 25 nm. The biocompatible component according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the particles have a particle size distribution obtained using an electrospray particle mobility scanner (ES-SMPS) up to 40% .4. A biocompatible component according to claim 1, characterized in that said particles have, as a rule, a spherical shape. A biocompatible component according to claim 1, characterized in that the metal oxide is at least partially crystalline. The biocompatible component according to claim 1, characterized in that the metal oxide contains titanium dioxide. The biocompatible component according to claim 6, characterized in that the predominant form of said titanium dioxide is anatase. The biocompatible component according to claim 6 or 7, characterized in that the metal oxide particles contain particles essentially consisting of titanium dioxide, and also optionally contain particles consisting essentially of one or more oxides of zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, cobalt or iridium. 9. A biocompatible component according to claim 1, characterized in that said particles form a layer. The biocompatible component according to claim 9, characterized in that said layer has a thickness in the range from 8 nm to about 1 μm, usually from 50 nm to 500 nm, for example, from 100 nm to 400 nm.
