An auto-injector with an improved locking mechanism for ease of use isprovided. The devicecomprises a syringe having a discharge nozzle moveably housed in a housing. Ina retractedposition the discharge nozzle is contained within the housing and in anextended position thedischarge nozzle extends from the housing through an exit aperture. There isan actuator actingon a drive, which in turn acts on the syringe to advance it from its retractedposition to itsextended position, to discharge its contents. A locking mechanism is moveablefrom an engagedposition in a direction into the housing at the exit aperture into adisengaged position. When inthe engaged position, the locking mechanism prevents actuation of the devicewhile in thedisengaged position, it permits actuation of the device. The locking mechanismcomprises acontact surface extending over or around the rim of the exit aperture.
