The method involves receiving two paths, and parameterizing the two characteristics paths of a virtual three dimensional biological object. Correlation between the two paths is measured by minimizing an energy function, where the energy function incorporates an error term and a switch term. The error term is a function of position difference and/or two deviations of concurrent and/or corresponding discrete sub intervals in the paths. The switch term is a function of length of concurrent and/or corresponding discrete sub intervals in the paths. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer readable medium with a set of instructions that are executed by a computer to regulate two characteristics paths (2) a device for regulating two characteristics path of a three dimensional biological object.
