A cable-less electrical hedge trimmer comprises a blade assembly including a reciprocable blade 22 moved by a direct current motor 29-32 located in a housing 11 adapted to receive a battery unit 91 and having electrical conductors for connecting the battery to the motor. The motor drives the blade 22 through gearing 44-47 housed in a casing 12 attached to the housing 11. The device has an overhead handle the lower part of which carries supports 67 for a pair of movable contacts 69 the lower ends of which are engaged by a pin 71 forming part of a switch device for controlling the operation of the trimmer, means being provided for preventing withdrawal or insertion of the battery while the switch is in the "on" position.
