When cutting a predetermined amount of silage from a front part (41) of a silage pile (40), use is made of a silage cutter (6) borne by an automotive chassis (2). Starting from scanned form data representing the form of the front part (41) of the silage pile (40), cutting position data are calculated. Each time during a silage removing cycle, before the cutting element (22) is brought to the cutting position, first form data are compared to second form data which are obtained from a last, preceding silage removing cycle. In response to a difference between the first and the second form data which exceeds a predetermined limit value, the silage removing cycle is stopped prior to cutting. An apparatus specifically designed for using such a method is also described.
