PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a natural antimicrobial preservative which is useable in broad fields including foods, medicines, cosmetics and living goods by efficiently separating benzoic acid which is excellent antimicrobial ingredient from fruit and juice of Vaccinium macrocarpon, an extract of squeezed lees of Vaccinium macrocarpon or a solution derived from a natural product including benzoic acid other than Vaccinium macrocarpon.

SOLUTION: The antimicrobial preservative contains benzoic aid separated from fruit of Vaccinium macrocarpon, its juice or an extract of squeezed lees of the juice as an active ingredient. The method for producing an antimicrobial agent and/or a preservative comprises separating and purifying benzoic acid by using an RO membrane, an UF membrane or a NF membrane from a solution containing saccharides or organic acids (excluding benzoic acid) together with benzoic acid.
