Exemplary methods and devices for diagnosing or characterizing inflammation within an anatomical structure can be provided. For example, at least one source device can be used to deliver at least one first electromagnetic radiation to the anatomy in vivo at at least one first wavelength. With at least one detector device, it is possible to detect at least one second electromagnetic radiation at at least one second wavelength supplied from the anatomy. The second radiation can be associated with the first radiation, and the first wavelength can be shorter than the second wavelength. The second radiation can be delivered from the anatomical structure without providing an artificial fluorescent material due to at least one change in the anatomical structure caused by inflammation. At least one computing device can be used to determine at least one characteristic of the structure based on the second radiation to diagnose or characterize inflammation within the anatomical structure.
