Disclosed is a recombinant, synthetic or isolated nucleic acid molecule encoding a delta-9 desaturase enzyme comprising an amino acid sequence that is at least 80% identical to SEQ ID NO:14, wherein the nucleic acid molecule further comprises a gene regulatory element. The sequence identity is as defined in the specification. Also disclosed is a method for decreasing the amount of saturated fatty acids in a plant cell by the use of above disclosed nucleic acid molecule.
