The drug delivery device has a syringe, a housing, a needle shield, a biasing member, and one or more blocking members. The needle shield is biased axially forward by a biasing member to selectively cover the needle of the syringe. However, the biasing member is blocked from biasing the needle shield axially forward until a radial movement of the blocking member caused by the axial forward movement of the syringe occurs.
