This invention provides a method for treating a subject afflicted with a tumorusing genetically modified mesenchymalstem cells, wherein each genetically modified mesenchymal stem cell containsan exogenous nucleic acid comprising (i)a cytotoxic protein-encoding region operably linked to (ii) a promoter orpromoter/enhancer combination, whereby the cytotoxicprotein is selectively expressed when the genetically modified mesenchymalstem cells come into proximity with the tumors stromaltissue. This invention further provides genetically modified mesenchymal stemcells for use in this method.
