Die antiinflammatorische und vorbeugende Wirkung antimikrobieller Substanzen lässt sich überraschenderweise durch den Einsatz von 4-(3-Ethenyl-3,7-dimethyl-1,6-octadienyl)-phenol steigern. Entsprechende vorteilhafte Mittel sind insbesondere und- und Zahnpflege- und -reinigungsmittel, die - bezogen auf ihr Gewicht - 0,001 bis 5 Gew.-% 4-(3-Ethenyl-3,7-dimethyl-1,6-octadienyl)-phenol und 0,01 bis 10 Gew.-% mindestens eines auf den Zähnen substantiven Polymers enthalten.Oral and dental care and cleaning agent comprises (a) 0.001-5 wt.% of 4-(3-ethenyl-3,7-dimethyl-1,6-octadienyl)-phenol, and (b) 0.01-10 wt.% of at least one substantive polymer on the teeth. Independent claims are included for the prevention and treatment of tooth decay and/or control of halitosis and/or for the treatment of gingivitis or periodontitis, comprising applying the agent to a toothbrush and cleaning the teeth, or applying the agent in the form of a mouthwash into the oral cavity and leaving a period of at least 10 seconds, preferably at least 45 seconds.
