The invention provides a method for producing a chimeric promoterpolynucleotide capable of controllingtran-scription of an operably linked polynucleotide in a plant cell or plant,wherein the method comprises combining: a) at least onese-quence motif comprising a sequence with at least 70% identity to SEQ IDNO:1, 11 or 12, and b) another polynucleotidese-quence. The invention also provides chimeric promoters polynucleotidescomprising the sequences defined in a) and b). Thein-vention also provides constructs, vectors, host cells, plant cells andplants comprising the chimeric promoter polynucleotides ofthe invention. The invention also provided methods for modifying geneexpression and phenotype of plant cells and plants bytransforming the plant cells and plants with the chimeric promoterpolynucleotides of the invention.
