A device and method that facilitates selective retrieval of an indwelling urological device from a patient. A urological medical device having a retrieval string. The retrieval string has a proximal end connected to the device and an opposite distal end. The retrieval string is configured into an initial closed configuration, and after being left in the patient's bladder for a period of time, pulling on the retrieval string allows the device to be withdrawn from the bladder. The distal end changes to a non-confined shape that can extend into the urethra. The device can include a bioerodible component 58 that allows the retrieval string to assume a non-confined shape after its in vivo degradation.
