An electrosurgical probe is configured to deliver power to tissue. A value ofa parameter (e.g., impedance or temperature) associated with a particular probedesign is determined. If the value of the parameter is within a range of valuesthat has been predetermined for the particular probe design, the probe is treatingtissue in a desired manner (e.g., ablation or shrinkage). If the value of the parameteris outside the range, power is delivered to the probe according to an algorithmhaving a pulsed profile including portions of low power and portions of high power.When the value is impedance, and the probe is in an ablative mode, a control moduleof the probe is configured to limit tissue necrosis. When the probe is in a non-ablativemode, power can be delivered to the probe according to a second algorithm.
