O2 and CO2 can be exchanged with blood by passing blood through the voids in the bundle of nanotubes, and the ends of the nanotubes open to the gas flow path. The voids in the bundle are configured to form an additional flow path that is large enough to allow red blood cells to flow through. Bundled nanotubes are spaced close enough to hold red blood cells in the flow path, but spaced apart to allow plasma to flow through the space between the bundled adjacent nanotubes The bundled nanotubes have defects in their walls that allow O2 and CO2 molecules to diffuse through the nanotubes. Defects are present in sufficient numbers and in all areas to efficiently send O2 to the blood and remove CO2 from the blood. Alternative embodiments may be used for fluids other than blood.
