Disclosed is a process for preparing a medicament comprising using an 8-(3-aminopiperidin-1-yl)xanthine of the general formula (I) or an enantiomer or salt thereof, wherein the substituents are as defined in the specification, comprising the following synthesis steps: a) reaction of a compound of the general formula (III) in which X is a leaving group selected from the group of halogens or sulphonic esters,with 3-(phthalimido)piperidine of formula (IV) or an enantiomer thereof, b) deprotection of the thus obtained compound of the general formula (II) and c) optional conversion to a physiologically tolerated salt and one or more carrier and diluents. Also disclosed are the enantiomers (R)-3-(phthalimido)piperidine and (S)-3- (phthalimido)piperidine and processes for their preparation. (R)-3-(phthalimido)piperidine is a particularly preferred reactant in the process for preparing compounds of formula (I).
