A syringe assembly with a passive disabling system is provided to prevent reuse. In one embodiment, the passive disable system is activated after completion of the scan cycle. A typical syringe assembly includes a stopper and a plunger rod attached in a manner to prevent the user from disassembling the syringe prior to completion of the scan cycle. The barrel may also include an annular extension or collar from the base end of the barrel. In certain configurations, the annular extension at least partially envelops a portion of the thumb press to prevent the user from approaching the thumb press and moving the plunger rod in the base direction.
