The invention includes a thermometer (100) with a backlight and a method forlighting the backlight. The thermometer has a temperature probe section (110)with a temperature sensing element (102), a processor (104) which determinessensed temperature readings of the living being from the signals provided bytemperature sensing element. The thermometer also includes a display (106) anda backlight for lighting the display. The backlight is activated upon acommand from the processor and the processor determines whether a decrease inthe temperature readings exceeds or is equal to a predetermined threshold inorder to activate the backlight. The method can include the steps of using theprocessor to monitor a temperature change indicated by the temperature sensingelement. The processor detects a temperature decrease and activates a firstcolor light emitting element (122) to backlight a display if the temperaturedecrease exceeds or equals a predetermined threshold.
