The absorbent substrate may include, woven and non-woven, surgical sponges and gauze. A method of manufacturing an X-ray detectable thread having the radiopaque core 12 and the at least partially encasing sheath 14 includes the step of extruding the radiopaque core 12 within the sheath 14.
