The present invention also relates to a method of activating a β2 adrenergic receptor, comprising administering an effective amount of a knot-wood extract of the invention or of at least one lignan selected from the list comprising (-)-hydroxymatairesinol (two epimers 7S, 8R, 8R and 7R, 8R, 8R), (-)(7S, 8R, 8R)-hydroxymatairesinol, (+)-lariciresinol, (-)-secoisolariciresinol, liovil and any epimers thereof.
