The invention provides a device which temporarily collects secreted material to prevent soiling and/or resulting irritation while protecting a stoma, and in particular the stoma tissue and peri-stomal skin, from impact. The stoma protector (1), which may protect a stoma prior to applying an ostomy pouch, comprises an elongate body (3) having a lumen which receives the stoma, an absorbent layer (7) which absorbs fluid from the stoma, and a reinforcing and/or protective layer (5) which protects and/or cushions the stoma from impact.
