Nanoparticles (10) functionalized with one or more zwitterionic moieties and compositions comprising the nanoparticles are provided. The nanoparticles 10 have a feature that particles are retained at least in the body as compared with other nanoparticles. The nanoparticles 10 include a core 20 having a core-free surface 30 that is essentially silica-free, and a shell 40 attached to the core surface 30. Shell 40 comprises at least one silane-functionalized zwitterionic moiety.
