PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent inadvertent needle sticks with a used pen needle.SOLUTION: A safety pen needle assembly comprises: a needle fixed to a nub； a displaceable shield for covering a distal end of the needle, the shield having an angled engagement surface defined thereon； a secondary shield for covering a proximal end of the needle, the secondary shield having at least one detent with a ramped surface formed thereon in axial alignment with the angled engagement surface； and biasing means disposed to urge the secondary shield proximally. The detent releasably retains the secondary shield in a first state with the proximal end of the needle being exposed.
