A refrigerator (10) includes a cabinet (14) coupled to one or more doors (18a, 18b) forming a storage compartment (22) and an air purifying duct system (24) positioned in the storage compartment (22). The air purifying duct system (24) includes an air duct (26) in fluid communication with the storage compartment (26), a fan (30) configured to circulate air between the storage compartment (22) and the air duct (26), a nano-coating (45) disposed on a portion of an interior surface (34) of the air duct (26), and an air circulation path (46) configured to direct pathogens (50) within the storage compartment (22) into the air duct (26) using the fan (30).
