A collapsible stretcher 2 comprises a pair of side members 4, cross members 6 extending between the side members, and a pair of handles 8 located at each end of the side members is disclosed. Each side member is provided as a plurality of tubular sections connectable to each other via male 14 and female 16 connecting formations. Each male connecting formation includes an insert portion 20 inserted into and chemically bonded to a female holding portion 22. The cross members may be U-shaped in cross section and the cross member may comprise first and second parts and a means for locking the parts together. In a preferred embodiment an outsert junction 30 joining side members and cross members may receive removable feet 32. The outsert junction may also be arranged to receive a fluid dispensing device and a patient monitoring equipment.
