When the skin is irradiated with ultraviolet light, tyrosine in the skin is oxidized by the action of tyrosinase to produce melanin pigment. For the purpose of inhibiting the excess production of melanin pigment and preventing the formation of pigmented spots or freckles, skin cosmetics containing kojic acid glycosides, L-ascorbic acid or a derivative thereof and the like have been proposed. However, these substances do not necessarily have a satisfactory skin-whitening effect, or often cause disadvantages in safety or stability of preparations when these substances are added to the preparations at concentrations at which a skin-whitening effect can be exerted. Meanwhile, although it is known that dehydrocostuslactone can be used as an active ingredient of anti-tumor agents, it is still not known that dehydrocostuslactone can inhibit the production of melanin.
