The present technology provides a trichome-specific promoter of the cannabis-derived cannabinoid biosynthetic enzyme gene, the nucleotide sequence of the trichome-specific promoter and the use of the promoter to regulate the production of cannabinoids and other compounds in an organism. The technology also provides chimeric genes, vectors and transgenic cells and organisms including plant cells and plants that contain trichome-specific promoters. Similarly, methods for expressing nucleic acid sequences using trichome-specific promoters in cells and organisms are also provided.
