PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic sphygmomanometer measuring a blood-pressure index in a short period of time.
SOLUTION: The electronic sphygmomanometer includes a first artery volume sensor for detecting a first artery volume signal representing the change of the volume of an artery caused by the pressure of a cuff, and a second artery volume sensor for detecting a second artery volume signal representing the change of the volume caused by the pulsation of the artery. Whenever the cuff pressure rapidly changes, characteristic points indicating occlusion end points of the artery are extracted from the first artery volume signal (S12 and S14), and the blood pressure value by one heartbeat is detected (S16). Further, the artery volume value at the time when the characteristic points are extracted is detected by one heartbeat from the second artery volume signal (S17). Then, by complementing the vascular characteristics indicating the interrelation between a plurality of pairs of detected blood values and the artery volume values (S24), blood-pressure indexes (e.g. the maximal blood pressure and the minimal blood pressure) are computed (S26).
