An apparatus for light-based skin treatment has a laser light source for providing a pulsed incident light beam for treating the skin by laser-induced optical destruction of hair or skin tissue. In one configuration, the focus system has a front focus lens for increasing the convergence of the incident light beam and a skin contact lens having a convex light entrance surface and a light exit surface. The focal position is controlled by adjusting the distance between the front focus lens and the skin contact lens.
