A system and method for verifying that a medication delivery device is properly programmedto deliver a medication from a medication source. The system and method insurethat the right medication is delivered in the right manner to a patient, and isparticularly advantageous where multiple medications are being delivered simultaneouslyto a patient. The system and method also provides for ensuring that the deviceis properly programmed each time a medication to be delivered is changed by requiringverification each time an infusion pump is opened. The identification devicescontemplated by the system includes barcodes affixed to the delivery deviceand medication. Other devices besides barcodes, such as RFID devices may alsobe used.
