The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition for treating or ameliorating a muscle atrophy disease comprising mammalian umbilical cord stem cells as an active ingredient. When the umbilical cord stem cells of the present invention are administered intramuscularly, the administered stem cells are effective for the prophylaxis or treatment of muscular atrophy diseases by proliferating the muscle cells of the administered site and increasing the size of muscle fibers and muscular contractility.
