The present invention provides compositions and kits comprising at least one nucleic acid molecule or polypeptide molecule encoding a mutant CoChop protein. The methods of the invention comprise administering to a subject a composition comprising a mutant CoChop to protect, improve or restore optical signaling. Preferably, the compositions and methods of the present invention are provided to subjects with impaired vision, thereby restoring vision to normal levels.
