The disclosed biometric authentication system acquires registered biometric information in a position, orientation and form suitable for authentication without placing a large burden on the user. To this end, the biometric authentication system is provided with a biometric image acquisition unit, an evaluation unit, an evaluation value extraction unit, and a registered biometric information storage unit. The evaluation unit evaluates each of the multiple biometric images acquired by the biometric image acquisition unit for each of multiple evaluation criteria and outputs, as the evaluation result for each of said evaluation criterion, the evaluation values indicating the degree to which the biometric images match the evaluation criterion. From the evaluation values of the biometric images outputted by the evaluation unit, the evaluation value extraction unit extracts for each evaluation condition the evaluation values that indicate a degree of matching greater than or equal to a prescribed evaluation threshold value. Furthermore, if multiple evaluation values are extracted for the same evaluation criterion, the evaluation value with the highest degree of matching for that evaluation criterion is selected.
