1. A composition comprising spore-forming bacterial cells with a mutation in the swrA ortholog that reduces the ability to swarm bacterial cells compared to isogenic bacterial cells without a mutation, and in which at least about 70% of the bacterial cells are spores. The composition according to claim 1, for which the ability to swarm is measured on the basis of growth on a non-liquid surface. The composition according to claim 1, in which the spore-forming bacterial cells with a mutation belong to the species Bacillus in the clade Bacillus subtilis. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the spore-forming bacterial cells with a mutation comprise at least 3.5% of all bacterial cells in the composition. The composition of claim 3, wherein the mutated spore-forming bacterial cells comprise a wild-type sfp ortholog. The composition of claim 5, wherein the mutated spore-forming bacterial cells further comprise a wild-type degQ ortholog and a wild-type epsC ortholog. The composition of claim 6, wherein each of the sfp ortholog, degQ ortholog, and epsC ortholog have at least about 90% sequence identity with the sfp gene, degQ gene, and epsC gene, respectively, from any of B. subtilis, B. amyloliquefaciens, B. pumilus, B. licheniformis, or B. atrophaeus. 8. The composition of claim 6, wherein at least about 90% sequence identity is present with the sfp gene, degQ gene, and epsC gene from any of B. subtilis strain 3610, B. amyloliquefaciens strain FZB42, B. pumilus strain SAFR-032, B licheniformis strain 14580 or B. atrophaeus strain 1942.9.
