The invention relates to a household appliance 1 with at least one polyoxometalate containing surface 17, wherein the catalytically active substance is a polyoxometalate of the Formula (I) or (II), Aq+3PVqZ12-qO40 (I), A3PZ4O24 (II)wherein Z is selected from Mo oder W,q is 0, 1 , 2 or 3, andA is selected from one or more cations selected from the group consisting of (XR1R2R3R4)+, wherein at least one of the groups R1, R2, R3, and R4 is a substituted or nonsubstituted alkyl or cycloalkyl group with at least five carbon atoms and wherein X is selected from nitrogen or phosphorus. The invention relates moreover to a method for operating a household appliance of this kind.
