The present invention describes an amino alcohol lipidide prepared by reacting an amine with an epoxide-terminal compound. A process for preparing amino alcohol dipyridides from commercially available starting materials is also proposed. Amino alcohol lipids may be prepared from racemic or stereochemically pure epoxides. Amino alcohol lipidide or salt forms thereof are preferably biodegradable and biocompatible and can be used in a variety of drug delivery systems. Because the amino alcohol dipyridate compounds have amino moieties, they are particularly suitable for delivery of polynucleotides. Complexes, micelles, liposomes or particles containing the lipidoids and polynucleotides of the present invention were prepared. The lipidides of the present invention can also be used in the production of microparticles for drug delivery.
