The two staple legs (26) enter the tissue until the tissue applies a compressive force to a compression device (23) disposed at least partly between the two staple legs (26). The compression device (23) has a compression surface (25) movably disposed between the two staple legs (26) and a compression resistor (220) that is connected to the bridge (22) and to the compression surface (25) and operable to resist movement of the compression surface (25) towards the bridge (22) with a force. The two staple legs (26) are deformed to maintain the compressive force between the tissue and the compression device (23).
