PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound having an inhibitory action on the growth of plant seed, inhibiting biosynthesis of DNA, by cultivating a fungus belonging to the genus Phoma betae, forming and accumulating the titled compound, isolating and collecting it from the culture solution. CONSTITUTION:A fungus such as Phoma betae Frank PS-13 (FERM-P6556) belonging to the genus Phoma betae, is cultivated in a nutritive medium, aphidicolin shown by the formula (when R is H) and/or aphidicolin-17-monoacetate (when R is acetyl group) is formed and accumulated, and isolated from the culture solution, to give aphidicolin and/or aphidicolin-17-monoacetate having an inhibitory action on the growth of plant seed, and an action to inhibit specifically DNA biosynthesis.
