Disclosed is a isolated nucleic acid molecule comprising a polynucleotide encoding a delta-9 desaturase enzyme, wherein the enzyme comprises an amino acid sequence being at least 80% identical to SEQ IO NO: 12, and wherein the polynucleotide is operably linked to a heterologous gene regulatory element. Further disclosed is a plant seed which expresses a recombinant extraplastidial desaturase that is at least 80% identical to SEQ ID NO: 12 or a seed of a transgenic Brassica napus line comprising a recombinant extraplastidial destaurase having at least 80% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO:12, the seed having a decreased level of 16:0, relative to an isogenic version of the transgenic Brassica napus line.
