PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soil material which can retain water and be used as a substitute for soil.SOLUTION: A solid/semi-solid material characterized by being a solid water retaining material obtained by blending a type of soil (perlite/vermiculite) with a high molecular weight water absorbing polymer, and a semi-solid material to which water molecules are adsorbed is used on the surface of, or so as to enclose the whole of soil for plant cultivation. A semi-swollen solid water retaining material characterized by becoming the semi-solid material by adding water thereto. Water is made to adsorb onto the high molecular weight polymer and the solid/semi-solid material is made to have a relatively small size such as that of a paving stone. The use of this on the surface of, or so as to enclose the whole of soil for plant cultivation allows the continuous supply of water from the solid/semi-solid material and prevents water loss from around the soil.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 10【課題】保水ならびに土の代替物として用いることが可能な用土材を提供する。【解決手段】高分子吸水ポリマーに，用土類（パーライト・バーミキュライト等）を混着させた凝個体保水材及び水分子を吸着させた半凝固体材料であって，植物栽培における用土表面や全体を包み込んで使用することを特徴とする凝固体・半凝固体材料。ならびに，水分を加えることにより，かかる半凝固体材料となることを特徴とする半膨潤凝固体保水材料。この凝固体・半凝固体材料は，高分子吸水ポリマーに水分を吸着させ，敷石のような比較的小さな大きさを有する，凝固体・半凝固体材料とする。これを植物の用土表面や全体を包み込むことにより，凝固体・半凝固体材料からの継続的な水分供給と，用土周囲からの水分蒸発を防止することを可能としたものである。【選択図】図１０
