An implant (100) for insertion within an intervertebral space (i) between adjacent vertebrae (V 1 , V 2 ) for supporting the vertebrae in predetermined spaced relation. The implant comprises: lower and upper plate members (1021, 102u; 1041, 104u) dimensioned for at least partial insertion within the intervertebral space defined between adjacent vertebrae. The lower and upper plate members have contacting surfaces for engaging respective vertebral end faces of the adjacent vertebrae. A linkage mechanism (118) is provided which includes at least one link member (120, 124) operatively connecting the lower and upper plate members, the linkage mechanism actuable to cause relative movement of the lower and upper plate members. Upon actuation, the contacting surfaces of the lower and upper plate members engage the vertebral end faces with the lower and upper plate members supporting the adj acent vertebrae in spaced relation during healing.
