Apparatus 1 for heating tobacco. The device comprises a compartment 2 for receiving a cigarette 3. The compartment is divided into a plurality of regions. A heater 4 is provided to heat the tobacco in the compartment during use to generate steam therefrom. The apparatus further includes means for controlling the heater, such that one region adjacent to the heater can be selectively heated, such that steam from the selectively heated region is withdrawn from the apparatus during operation of the heater.
