One illustrative method disclosure herein includes: receiving a sensor signal from a sensor (115) configured to determine one or more objects associated with an area； determining area information based in part on the sensor signal； determining a haptic effect based in part on the area information； and transmitting a haptic signal associated with the haptic effect to a haptic output device (118) configured to output the haptic effect.
