A computer-implemented method is provided for anatomically indexing a subject. The method includes receiving image scan data representative of a volume of a subject, the image scan data comprising a plurality of image slices of the subject and including at least a portion of the subject's spine. Identifying the spinal canal of the subject's spine in the image scan data and determining a plurality of markers for the spinal column, each marker defining a spine level coordinate system As such, the method includes the steps of showing the different vertebral bodies of the spinal column and including their positions in the image scan data defined in the coordinate system and storing each marker in the database along with its position.
