The present invention relates to a method and system configured for cough synchronization in a mechanical air-exhaust system. The system is configured to synchronize (712) the transition from the insufflation mode to the exhaust mode by detecting the patient's cough effort, eg, at the end of the insufflation mode. Detection of the patient's cough effort is based on one or more parameters associated with the gas in the system.
